Perfect daily driver at a wide roast range, abundant body and sweetness, aromatic hints, notes of brûlée sugar crust, goji berry, black tea with lemon, spice, dark cocoa. City to Full City+. Good for espresso.
Murambi makes such a delicious, sweet brewed coffee, with the balance and versatility I look for in a daily driver. It's versatile in terms of roast flavors as well, capable of more "light and bright" characteristics at City, as well as deep, chocolate roast flavors if roasted beyond Full City. The fragrance and aromatic profiles highlight sweet notes of turbinado type semi-refined sugars, with a complex mixture of tea, and chocolate malted grain. When brewed, City roasts of Murambi are medium-bodied cup, moderately bright and tea-like, with unrefined sugar notes that lead to a bittersweet finish. The sweet notes that unfold in the cup brought to mind sugar in the raw, with hints of toasted brûlée crust, and cacao husk tea. Spice and fruit hints crop up in the cooling cup, with accents of golden raisin, and tart dried goji berry. The acidity is quite nice in these lighter roasts and shows tangy aspects brisk black tea with lemon. My Full City roast drew out more intense roast flavors, like dark cocoa, and 70%+ cacao bar, accented by a hint of dark fruit. Big body lends some staying power to these delicious chocolate flavors, and leads to a long finish. Murambi shows all the markers of a standout single origin espresso at this roast level too!
Murambi is an impressive operation, a privately owned collection site in the Kiganda area near the Mubarazi river. The coffee processed at Murambi are from the surrounding hillside villages ("collines"), which there's talk of separating in the future, but this year was all blended together by day of delivery. Most of the farms are around 2000 meters above sea level and entirely planted in Bourbon. They process coffee in a similar way to Kenya in that the cherry is removed with disc pulpers, fermented for almost a full day and then washed/soaks for another day before being laid out to dry on raised beds. Last year the station received a large premium at the year's end for the coffees they exported and the mill owner invested in 450 goats that were distributed to as many farmers who work with the station. The idea is for the goats to both help with building out an organic farming system, as well as an added source of revenue for the farmers. Also worth a mention that Murambi has placed top 10 in the Burundi Cup of Excellence competition, including taking 1st place!
