Product Overview
Full Cupping Notes

The dry fragrance had a scent of mixed dried fruits, peach and raisin, with a rustic sweetness of sorghum syrup, and dark spice note. The wet aroma smelled of dried prunes and date pieces, a pulpy accent of fruit cider, and rustic cocoa. There are some really nice fruit tones in this dry process coffee that fall into the more rustic, dried fruit category than fresh, or "bright". Think natural dried peach, apricot, date rolls with coconut, and tamarind. Acidity is kept to a minimum, but the cup does have a mild shimmer from the fruits. Bittersweetness builds as the coffee cools giving off rustic dark chocolate and bittering cocoa, fading to interesting spice mix notes, like Masala and saffron in the aftertaste. Full City roasts draw out the dark toned bittering and chocolate-y dimension, and I picked up on some canned fruit aspects, along with leathery hints in the aroma.

Origin & Farm Notes

This coffee is from a washing station in Bugoye town, part of the Rwenzori mountain range in Western Uganda. The station was built a few years back as part of a quality focused effort aimed at building smaller lots that focus on regional distinction. This is more challenging than you might think. Historically, Uganda was a supplier of large commercial blends, where volume, not quality, was the main objective. In contrast, these stations offer a competitive price as well as assistance to attract local farmers to deliver their cherry where it is centrally processed and separated into standardized grades. The Bugoye site sits at around 1200 meters above sea level, and while you see coffee growing in the area, most of it comes from the hills above between 1500 to 1800 meters. It's quite rural, and the higher hillside farms lack roads, leaving farmers to transport their harvest by donkey on foot. They produce a lot of dry process coffee at this site, made up from small-holder farms in the surrounding areas. We enjoyed the classic dry process intensity this 20 bag lot produced, with the sort of rustic dried fruit notes and syrupy body that stand up to roast development.
