Leo's coffee has that unique Jasmine quality that we think of as being intrinsically linked to the Gesha variety. While never promised, this lot delivers that prized aromatic top note when roasted light, along with clean underlying sweetness and brisk, tea-like fragrant notes that bring about lively mouthfeel. The fragrance off the grinds showed impressive honey and raw sugar notes, and light florality, like jasmine, and chamomile tea. The steam smells so sweet after pouring hot water, with cane sugar accented by dried potpourri and spice. Stick to City roast level here, no darker! That's where the acidity level pops, and cup flavors are impacted by the more subtle perfumed aromatics. Light roasts sacrifice body to some extent, but a lighter mouthfeel works really well with the more delicate, aromatic profile. The sweetness came off like black tea sweetened with honey, a flavor that expands in the finish, and brings about a tannic quality in the mouthfeel. Brewed in a V60 (15ml water to 1g coffee, for those wondering) the floral notes were apparent, and well integrated into the sweetness. It has an elegant complexity that builds a bit as you move through the cup. I picked up on notes of star jasmine and honeysuckle, with a tart citrus note that brought to mind orange trees in bloom. There's ample sweetness at City roast level, simple syrup, semi refined sugars, fading to fragrant tea notes like Earl Grey, and jasmine pearl tea.

This lot of Gesha is from Leonardo Henao, someone we've worked with in Colombia for years. He was behind the Los Palomos farm in Urrao, which hopefully you had the pleasure of trying when we carried it. Los Palomos was the first farm for Leo, who at that time had aquired years of knowledge as the small producer coordinator for the exporter we buy from, and also at the University where he specialized in fermentation. Los Palomos was where he cut his teeth as a coffee farmer, refining his harvest and post-harvest practices. He built out an incredible farm that was also very much a proving grounds for personal passions like experimental fermentation practices, and organic farming. The culmination of his efforts was winning the 2020 Cup of Excellence with a Chiroso coffee. Sadly, shortly after that momentous even he was all but forced to sell Los Palomos during a period of paramilitary violence, and security concerns in Urrao. Thankfully, Leo's story as a coffee farmer didn't stop there. A couple years later, an opportunity to buy a farm in Santa Barbara, much closer to his home in Medellín, came up, and he took it. His new farm is aptly named "El Jardín", or "the garden".  It's a variety garden, where Leo grows several different coffee types, like Chiroso, SL-28, Colombia, and Gesha. This lot is a separation of just the Gesha from the farm, and turned out quite nice (see cupping notes)! The farm is a total of 67 hectares, with 49 currently planted in coffee. The Gesha is planted at the highest point of the farm, topping out at 2030 meters above sea level.
