This Caturra lot from Los Alpes is well-rounded and crowd-pleasing, with the kind of bittersweet profile that's great as black coffee, or paired with cream. Brown sugar, almond, Dutch cocoa, apple. City to Full City+. Good for espresso.

Product Overview
Full Cupping Notes

The grinds let off a caramel-y sweet note, accented by almond biscotti cookie, and cocoa. Adding hot water develops dark toffee and caramel notes, with milk chocolate in the steam. Los Alpes brews balanced flavors at a wide range of roasts. The lighter roasts offered subtle, bright accents, whereas bittersweetness and body are developed at Full City and beyond. My City+ brew was well-rounded with a nice interplay of bittersweet tones and a soft hint of acidity. It had a simple brown sugar note to the sweetness, along with accents of toffee-coated almond, Dutch cocoa and apple. My Full City+ roast was a more deep-toned, bodied brew, with high % dark chocolate and a hint of dried coconut in the aftertaste. Both roasts were well-rounded and crowd-pleasing, the kind of simple, bittersweet profiles that can be showcased as black coffee, or paired with cream. It works great as espresso too.

Farm Notes

Origin & Farm Notes

Finca Los Alpes is part of the Buenos Aires family of farms in the Jinotega growing region. We've visited and buy coffees from the other farms, Acopio Suyatal, La Laguna, and of course Buenos Aires, all managed by the Valladarez family who between father Luis Emilio, and son Olman, have been growing coffee in the region for over 50 years. This lot is all Caturra, which is a cultivated mutation of Bourbon that occurred in Brazil in the mid '30s, but was planted in South and Central America mostly in the 1950s. At 1500 meters above sea level, Los Alpes is one of the highest parts of the farm and accessed by a trail leading up the mountain from another coffee plot they manage, Ojo de Agua. It's processed at the Buenos Aires beneficio down below, closer to town, then the wet parchment is moved to the dry mill in Ocotal. This is one of a dozen lots we purchased from Cafetelera Buenos Aires.
