Product Overview
Full Cupping Notes

City roasts of Haruse smelled amazing, and the flavors in the cup followed suit. While this brews delicious fruit top notes, it's more on the "light and bright" end of the spectrum of dry process coffee flavors. Grinding the coffee left a sweet honey scent hanging in the air, potent and almost floral in sweetness, with accents of golden apricot and peach pie filling. The wet aroma was peppered with sweet, floral fruits, like peach blossom, fresh apricot, and mango, and the steam smelled saturated with light brown sugars. The brew is bright and very aromatic, and I found it to have a lot in common with wet process coffees. Fruits have a freshness to them, like fragrant citrus types such as mandarin orange, yuzu, and citron essence. The cup sweetness is not sacrificed in light roasts either, with notes of demerara and sucanat raw sugars propping up some of the more delicate flavors. The aroma has a perfumed quality to it as it cools, with elegant floral hints of honeysuckle, and sweet freesia flowers in the nose, along with fragrant black teas. In general, we found Haruse to be ideal for a fragrant pour-over brew, highlighting the clean sweetness and cup aroma, as well as a bright and syrupy body that's on the lighter, silky side.

Origin & Farm Notes

This coffee is from a site near Kercha town, close to the border of Uraga in Ethiopia's southern Guji Zone. It's from a privately owned station who have an outgrower program with more than 1500 Guji farmers, whose coffee they buy, process, and export. In practice, this essentially means the mill owner is supplying small holders with seedlings, and often agronomical support as well, in order to promote coffee production in the regions they operate in. The family who owns the mill has 150,000 hectares of coffee too, and makes up a chunk of their exportable volume each year. There were many reasons to be drawn to their Haruse lot this season, with clean cup flavors topping the list. It shares a lot in common with washed coffee ("wet process"), especially in the brighter citrus notes and aromatic floral overlay that comes through when roasted in the City-City+ range. Most of the farmers who sell to Haruse have less than 1 hectare of coffee, and the farms reach as high as 2,200 meters above sea level in the region.
