Rwanda Rutsiro Mushonyi
Rwanda Rutsiro Mushonyi
Rwanda Rutsiro Mushonyi
A sweet, bright Rwandan coffee with flavors of syrupy dark honey, aromatic Earl Grey, cinnamon apple tea, clove spice, and complex acidic impressions of citrus and strawberry. Nice dark roasted too! City to Full City.
Full Cupping Notes
The ground coffee displays a sweet scent of butter cream frosting with a clove spice accent at City roast level. The wet aroma shows fragrant sweetness, with spice notes, like lemon ginger tea, and cinnamon-laced honey. The cup at City roast level has a mix of clean raw sugar sweetness, and complex aromatics of tea and spices. The flavor matrix touches on aspects of black tea like aromatic Earl Grey with bergamot citrus, cinnamon apple herbal tea, and some whole cloves. Mushonyi cools so well, the level of sweetness is boosted by an emerging honey sweetness, and complex acidity that has elements of citrus and strawberry. The cup flavors of Mushonyi at Full City are oriented around dark cacao/chocolate bass notes, and ribbons of caramel sugars. We thoroughly enjoyed both City and Full City roasts as brewed coffee, the cups so vastly different. As espresso, Full City roasts are delicious and push a cinnamon-spiced chocolate flavor to the front of the cup, with a dark fruit accent note.

Origin & Farm Notes
Mushonyi coffee processing station is in Rwanda's Rutsiro district in the Western Province. It's origins go back to being owned by the army, and then purchased by a group who manage other washing stations in the greater Western Province region. The site is located at 1825 meters above sea level, and Mushonyi processes coffees collected at several auxiliary sites in the highlands where they buy cherry from farms all the way up to 2000 meters or so. There are 160 drying beds at the site, and while they are focused on wet process coffees, they are also producing some naturals too. This lot is highly recommended to those who appreciate the baking spice/tea-like qualities that often show in Rwanda coffees when roasted light. But Mushonyi presents very well when roasted dark too, offering focused flavors of chocolate bittersweets and less of the tea-like vibrance sensed at City.
