Product Overview
Full Cupping Notes

This coffee from Mutheka FCS (Kaiguri to be exact) turned out to be a very useful Kenya. Not only does it satisfy our taste for a brightly-sweet coffee, but dark roasts proved to be a standout espresso too. The fragrance of my City roast smelled of caramelized sugar and dark fruit hints, raisins, dried cranberry and ginger chew candy. The wet aroma turned up a caramelized sweetness, with notes of buttery toffee and light caramel, and a spiced-sweet hint of cola. City/City+ roasts have a juicy texture to them, propped up by fruited accents and syrupy sweetness. The cup has a potent brown sugar note, red fruits like apple and pomegranate, tangy golden raisin, and accents of sweet citrus and spices that brings to mind Turkish Delight candies. The acidity is present but not prominent, and offers more of a malic apple aspect in the mouthfeel, fading to tea bittering in the finish. Full City roasts are heavy on the palate and pairs red berry hints with rich dark chocolate. It makes such a creamy shot of espresso (pulled 24 grams of espresso from 18 grams of coffee over 30 seconds). Flavors of syrupy dark chocolate and juicy fruits consolidate in the shot, with notes of plum, black cherry and a vibrant hint of lemon.

Origin & Farm Notes

This lot is from a station called Kaiguri, which is a part of the Mutheka FCS (Farmers Cooperative Society). Mutheka currently has 7 cooperative member "factories", with over 5,000 registered members. Kaiguri factory has coffee cherry catchment and washing station in the area where local farmers (growing altitudes range from 1700 to 1800 meters), who are members of the cooperative, delivery coffee cherry for regional bulking. The coffee is washed, fermented, and laid out on raised beds to dry. The coffee is sorted all along the way, down to the dry milling, and separated by factory out turns. Usually you only see AA (the largest), AB, and Peaberry, but there are other lower grades too, like C and TT. This AB out turn was one of a few different screen size separations we purchased from Kaiguri. "AB" signifies the size of the bean, which is 15/64" - 17/64" in size. We also have the AA lot available, and a unique opportunity to taste different screen separations from the same supplier. The sort of this lot is very nice, some nicks which tends to happen due to the large size of the beans as they pass through the milling equipment, but not much else.
