Product Overview
Full Cupping Notes

Pour-overs are a real treat, with bright fruits and tangy accents that feel well integrated into the cup sweetness, and an aromatic top end.At City roast level, fragrance of the grinds has a red honey note, sweet and syrupy, with spice accents, and hints of dried fruit. The wet aroma has potent Cola-like sweetness, with citrus peel, and a fragrant vanilla note wrapped in. The cup is bright and juicy, with spiced sweetness that fades to tannic black teas and aromatic highlights. Vibrant citrus and sweet tea were the first perceptible flavors, and it wasn't until the coffee cooled a bit that I started to get a clearer picture of what's in store. The sweetness shows hints of minimally processed sugars, like fragrant piloncillo, and dark honey. Tangy flavors of green apple, orange, and tamarind blend nicely with the brisk, bracing acidic impression of long-steeped black tea, along with some whole spice bittering aspects in the finish. The cup aromatics also come alive, with hints of Earl Grey and cardamom adding to that effect. While I preferred City roasts, Igutha produces quite an enjoyable cup at Full City too. Though roast tones are certainly present, I wouldn't call it "bittersweet". It's the milder fruit underlay that kept me coming back for more; dark grape, plum, and red raisin.

Origin & Farm Notes

This is the AB grade selection from the Igutha wet mill in Nyeri. The wet mill (called a "Factory" in Kenya) operates under the Rugi Farmer's Cooperative Society, an umbrella organization that oversees operations of their associated wet mills, and helps with things like agronomical support to farmers, pre-financing during the harvest season, and marketing the coffees. It's my understanding that Rugi is an older coop, started back in the late 1960's. Igutha currently has around 600 members delivering their coffee cherry to the mill, and farms are typically 1 hectare or less, and at an altitude range of 1700 - 1900 meters. After depulping the coffee, they employ up to 48 hour fermentation time to beak down the sticky fruit mucilage surrounding the seeds. The coffee is then moved to raised drying beds where it will dry for 2-3 weeks. The preferred cultivars are SL-28, and SL-34 bourbon selections, known for good cup quality, especially when growing conditions are favorable. But you also see Batain, Ruiru 11, quite common in Kenya.
