Product Overview
Full Cupping Notes

This year's coffee is as versatile as ever, promising layered sweet flavors and aromatic accents when roasted light, or bittersweet, chocolatey profiles at darker levels. At City+, the ground coffee smells of molasses, brown sugar, and milk chocolate. Pouring hot water pulls out a dark caramelized sweetness, with cane sugar, and raisin accent. There's an aromatic note in the brewed coffee that brings a floral aspect to the sweetness, fragrant sugar cane juice, vanilla caramel, and something like lavender or violet flavored candies (think C. Howards violet candies, if you've tried them). It's subtle, yet complex and delicious, adding a pleasant dimension to the sweetness. The cup fades to faint roast notes such as chocolate malted grains, and light cocoa powder finish. Full City roasts bring out this Bourbon's dark chocolate side, with flavors that hint at rich torte and creamy fudge that bring a bittering layer to the cup profile. Full City/Full City+ roasts never disappoint as espresso either - roasted cacao, chocolate-almond toffee, dried currant, and a bright note of lemon zest.

Farm Notes

Origin & Farm Notes

Acatenango is one of the under appreciated growing regions of Guatemala. It has always been overshadowed by nearby Antigua, and in fact many Acatenango coffees were sold as Antigua lots for many years. In mill-mark Antiguas, this is still the case, since farmers who sell cherries or the collectors who round it up and bring it to the mill rarely respect such boundaries. But Acatenango coffees come from some of the most beautiful farms I have seen in Guatemala, and San Diego Buena Vista ("SDBV") is a case in point. I have visited this 1500 meter farm several times and have been impressed with their practices, the way they have separated all the cultivars on the farm, and the beautiful condition of the mill. Last time I was there, all the harvest was in, and they were reconditioning the mill, replacing bearings, cleaning and painting. Reinvestment and pride are always good signs at a mill! Cleanliness doesn't hurt either, and the SDBV mill, while quite old, was beautiful, even down to the flowers surrounding the office alongside the drying patio. This is a red bourbon separation from the farm.
