Product Overview
Full Cupping Notes

I think this is the third year we've bought coffee from Aba Bulgu, but we've only purchased his dry process coffee up until now. This year, we were able to procure two lots from this Jimma producer, both natural and washed. If you've tasted coffee from Duromina cooperative, the cup flavors found here should be familiar. It has the kind of honeyed sweetness and stone fruit-floral qualities that are unique to coffees from this Western region. The grinds let off a scent of malt syrup and peach, with a zesty lime accent, and floral hint. "Warm honey", was what came to mind when pouring the hot water, a potent level of sweetness, with aromatic accents of orange blossom, dried stone fruit, and bright, tea-like notes. At City roast level, the cup is brightly accented by aromatic fruits and vibrant citrus notes, peach that's reached a floral-level of ripeness, strawberry, hibiscus and apricot teas, lemon Italian ice and a hint of mango. Notes of red honey and fruit-flavored syrups give this coffee an appealing syrupy quality, and the acidity toes the line between tartaric and citric, underscored by an array of fruit accents. We were very happy with how it cupped at Full City level too, more on the roast-toned chocolate side of the flavor spectrum, but with hints of juicy black plum, orange rind and toasted coconut in the aftertaste.

Origin & Farm Notes

This coffee is from a farmer named Abdurhiman Aba Bulgu in Kedamesa, which is part of Woreda Goma. In fact, his farm is a part of the Duromina area, a name you likely recognize as being linked to a cooperative of the same name. Aba Bulgu ("Aba" is a term of reverence that translates to "father") has an 13 hectare farm and produces both wet and dry process coffee, this being the former. We've bought his excellent dry process coffee in previous years, but this is the first washed coffee we've tried, and it's very nice! The altitude at Aba Bulgu's farm spans 1975 to 2200 meters above sea level, and planted primarily in a variety from the Jimma Agricultural Research Center ("JARC"), simply identified as "74110". JARC is the government coffee research center, and responsible for breeding improved sub varieties from many of the heirloom local coffee strains. Currently, there are 42 different JARC types, and 74110 is a fairly common one to see planted, along with others, like 74112.
