The Fresh Roast SR500 is a fluid bed air roaster featuring heat and fan speed adjustments, a glass roasting chamber for visibility, and a nifty chaff collector that makes clean up easy. If you are used to roasting on an electric popcorn popper, the Fresh Roast SR500 offers the features you are missing.
The Fresh Roast SR500 uses a simple switch for setting low, medium or high heat, a dial for adjusting fan speed (+/- 10%) and a digital timer. We like the general design concept because it doesn't try to automate anything and allows direct user control.
The chaff collector works well, and although it doesn't have a smoke reducer, the top of the machine slows the flow of smoke so roasting under your oven's hood fan will eliminate most of the smoke. In terms of price and control over the roast, the SR500 is in line with the discontinued Hearthware iRoast2, but the SR500 has a more intuitive interface and a quieter fan. The SR500 does a great job of agitating the beans (see the details page). We used the highest fan speed and got an acceptably even roast with the SR500. Switching to "cool" in order to extend the roast is a good trick to help with roast control. In short, the SR500 is a better roaster than Fresh Roast's other model, the SR300, and is worth the extra money. Our logo is printed on the backside of the chaff collector.
