Benti Nenka shows best at City roast level, and I've even been dropping my roast toward the tail end of 1st Crack to bring out the bright, fruited side of this syrupy-sweet coffee. The dry fragrance has a slightly spiced-sweetness, semi-refined sugars and clove, along with hints of honey, and peach tea. The wet aroma draws out the stone fruit notes that accent sweet simple syrup and honey notes, and a whiff of blackberry in the steam. The cup is sweet from start to finish, with fruit accents and aromatic hints that are very 'Guji' like. There's a rue herb aspect we often sense in Guji coffees that brings an herbal freshness to the cup, and even a bit floral. The coffee cools very well, with amazing clarity and sweetness, and moderate level of acidity that's on the juicy side. I picked up on aromatic notes of peach and apricot, Sencha green tea, dried berries, warming spices, and a tart twist of green grape. The underlying sweetness has elements of cane sugar, and white honey that lead to a sweet finish. Benti Nenka's incredible flavors peak in light roasts, perhaps showcased best in pour-over filter brews.

The Benti Nenka processing site is located in a village ("Kebele") of the same name within the Hambela Wamena region, Ethiopia's Guji Zone. It's a sister site to Hambela Dabaye, that you may be familiar with from previous years from which we also have a dry processed lot available right now. This is from the same station owner, Kedir Hassan, a proficient and capable engineer as well as coffee farmer. He's erected a few stations in Hambela Wamena region, some producing both washed and dry process ("naturals") coffees, and though Benti Nenka used to only produce naturals, they had wet process coffee last season as well. Of course he did not complete these wet mills on his own, and thanks to his long standing connection with the the people in this area, he had much needed community support on his side. Kedir splits bamboo reeds for constructing his drying beds, so they're flat and quite sturdy. You see a lot of chicken wire used at other sites, which tends to sag, creating uneven coffee layers. This lot is comprised of coffee from the small holders in the Benti Nenka area, whose farms span an altitude range of roughly 1900 to 2100 meters above sea level.
