Sumatra Wet Process Kebun Gayo
Sumatra Wet Process Kebun Gayo
Sumatra Wet Process Kebun Gayo
Pleasantly simple cup, syrupy sweet, brown sugar with punchy roast flavors like Dutch cocoa, chocolate brownie, and mild acidity. Espresso shots are deep-toned with satiny texture. City+ to Full City+. Good for espresso.
Full Cupping Notes
The grinds had a sweet scent of dark caramel, and toffee, accented by a note of bitter cocoa powder, and a savory 'toasted' hint of popcorn. The wet aroma carries a nice level of sweetness, with malty accents, smokey caramelized sugar, and cocoa. The cup shows solid sweetness that's a bit syrupy. This isn't a wet hulled coffee, so don't expect rustic flavors, and earth tones. It's a fairly simple cup, clean notes of brown sugar, with more moderate roast flavors like Dutch cocoa, and chocolate brownie. The acidity level is on the mild side, with roast tones providing all the 'punch'. I pulled shots with my Full City roast after a few days rest, and found it to be deep toned, with satiny-smooth texture, punchy dark chocolate, and powdery cocoa finish. Perfect for milk drinks.

Origin & Farm Notes
While we don't know a lot of specifics about this lot, it was purchased through a private mill who operate in Aceh who are buying coffee from small holders around Gayo Regency, of Aceh. In a system where farmers sell to local collector, much rides on the long-standing relationships between the two parties, and the collector is really the key person to determine coffee quality. A good collector buys coffees direct, rather than in the local village coffee markets where quality is low, processing of the coffees haphazard, and everything gets mixed together. Altitude in the region ranges from 1300 - 1500 meters, and the typical varietals grown are Ateng Bergendal, and Jember. This is a fully washed coffee, meaning that it was pulped and fermented to remove the fruit, and dried with the parchment layer intact to the seed. The cup has more in common with a basic Latin American coffee, than most wet hulled Sumatra's.
