Guatemala San Diego Buena Vista Bourbon
Guatemala San Diego Buena Vista Bourbon
Guatemala San Diego Buena Vista Bourbon
Attractive bittersweet flavor profile, delicious dark chocolate aspects, cocoa powder, vanilla caramel, Brazil nut, molasses, tenor toned hints. City+ to Full City+. Good for espresso.
Full Cupping Notes
San Diego Buena Vista ("SDBV") has a balanced bittersweet flavor profile that works very well for both brew and espresso. The dry fragrance of the SDVB has restrained raw sugar and spice smells in the sweetness, with a hint of pecan shortbread. The aroma of City+ roasts shows balanced bittersweet notes of cocoa laced with caramel, and walnut. City+ roasts highlight aspects of dark sugar, vanilla caramels, Brazil nut, with a bittersweet aftertaste. It's a nice tenor toned coffee at this roast level, with acidic hints of green tea. Full City brings out roast flavors that point to dark chocolates, Dutch drinking cocoa, adding a pleasant bittering layer to the cup profile. There's a great relationship between sweetness and bittersweetness in SDBV, striking impressive balance at a wide range of roast levels. San Diego Buena Vista excels as espresso too - roasted cacao, creamy nut, and light citrus peel note with Full City and Full City+ roasting.

Origin & Farm Notes
Acatenango is one of the under appreciated growing regions of Guatemala. It has always been overshadowed by nearby Antigua, and in fact many Acatenango coffees were sold as Antigua lots for many years. In mill-mark Antiguas, this is still the case, since farmers who sell cherries or the collectors who round it up and bring it to the mill rarely respect such boundaries. But Acatenango coffees come from some of the most beautiful farms I have seen in Guatemala, and San Diego Buena Vista ("SDBV") is a case in point. I have visited this 1500 meter farm several times and have been impressed with their practices, the way they have separated all the cultivars on the farm, and the beautiful condition of the mill. Last time I was there, all the harvest was in, and they were reconditioning the mill, replacing bearings, cleaning and painting. Reinvestment and pride are always good signs at a mill! Cleanliness doesn't hurt either, and the SDBV mill, while quite old, was beautiful, even down to the flowers surrounding the office alongside the drying patio. This is a red bourbon separation from the farm.
