Nicaragua Los Alpes Caturra
Nicaragua Los Alpes Caturra
Shows well at a wide range of roasts, moderately sweet with caramel impressions, bright accents in light roasts, and high potential for bittersweetness body at darker levels. City to Full City+. Good for espresso.
Full Cupping Notes
The fragrance is caramel-sweet and lightly spiced, with notes of almond biscotti cookie, and some cocoa. Adding hot water develops sundae topping smells, like warm caramel, butterscotch, and milk chocolate. Los Alpes shows well at a broad range of roasts, moderate sweetness with caramel impressions, bright accents in light roasts, and a high potential for bittersweetness and body at darker levels. The lighter roasts brew up flavors of dark caramel, toffee-coated almond, with tangy hints of peach and lemon rind. Darker roasts have impressive body, and a chocolate-coconut flavor that brought to mind German chocolate cake. There's also a subtle fruit hint of marmalade. Stunning as espresso too, thick-textured, with layers of chocolatey roast flavors, creamy nut, and a splash of citrus.

Origin & Farm Notes
Finca Los Alpes is part of the Buenos Aires family of farms in the Jinotega growing region. We've visited and buy coffees from the other farms, Acopio Suyatal, La Laguna, and of course Buenos Aires, all managed by the Valladarez family who between father Luis Emilio, and son Olman, have been growing coffee in the region for over 50 years. This lot is all Caturra, which is a cultivated mutation of Bourbon that occurred in Brazil in the mid '30s, but was planted in South and Central America mostly in the 1950s. The coffee is grown around 1400 meters, and processed at the Buenos Aires beneficio down below, closer to town, then the wet parchment is moved from beneficio to the dry mill in Ocotal proper. This is one of a dozen lots we purchased from Cafetelera Buenos Aires.
