Product Overview
Full Cupping Notes

Rwandan coffees can be the perfect alternative for high grown coffees from Guatemala. These all Bourbon variety lots tend to have the syrupy sweetness, and moderate acidity you find in Huehuetenango coffees, for example, and Nkora is a good example of this. The fragrance off the grinds is sweet-toned, brown sugar, raw honey, and spice. Hot water brings out a scent of fresh baked goods, like warm oatmeal cookies with raisin and cinnamon. I picked up on a hint of rustic dried prune when running my spoon through the wet crust that formed at the top of my cupping glass. The brew has nicely balanced sweetness at a wide range of roasts, with City/City+ offering a moderate level of acidity that has an appealing citric note, and a little brisk in the aftertaste. There's a sticky-sweet hint of dark fruit that brought to mind dried Mission Fig, and a spice/dry note in the finish like ceylon cinnamon bark. Full City roasts have surprisingly juicy texture, syrupy dark chocolate, and a hint of dark berry.

Origin & Farm Notes

Nkora coffee washing station is one of the oldest wet mills in Rwanda, having been established back in 1959. Parts of the old station still exist but are falling into the watershed. This whole area is now part of a local hydroelectric project that, along with zoning changes, has left the future for Nkora uncertain. They are currently having their lease renewed on 1 year term basis. The station itself sits at 1450 meters above sea level, which is on the lower side. That said, there is a high altitude zone that they buy from that goes all the way up to 2000 meters. This is the first year we've bought Nkora, and we were able to get out to visit the site last year (2024). We found their coffee to be super versatile and sweet, with the sort of sweet/bright profile we think of as being a flavor correlate to high grown Guatemalan coffee.
