Kenya Kirinyaga Kiamugumo Peaberry
Kenya Kirinyaga Kiamugumo Peaberry
Kenya Kirinyaga Kiamugumo Peaberry
Layers of juicy flavors, syrupy sweetness, and complex aroma as it cools. Apple tones come through in cup sweetness and refreshing acidity, accented by notes of green grape, black currant tea, and stone fruit. City to City+.
Full Cupping Notes
The grinds of my City roast had a mouthwatering scent of ripe apple, plump berry, with aromatic spice notes, and sweet black tea. I terms of aroma, the wet crust pulled out intense fruited sweetness, baked apple tart, pear butter, dark grape, crystalized brown sugar, and a glaze of honey. The cup delivers layers of juicy flavors, syrupy sweet raw sugar notes, and cools to a fairly complex aroma. The acidity has a juicy quality too, like apple or plum, and on the refreshing side rather than tongue-twisting, or citric (we like those too!). At City roast level, I'd characterize the sweetness as being like Golden apple, with a bit of briskness, like the sweet/bright aspects of a Honey Crisp. Moving through the cup, flavors gave off hints of dark sugars, green grape, peach preserves, and a note of black currant tea. The cup has pleasing tactile appeal to it, and a bit like fruit juice. Our City+ roast developed a bittersweet bass tone that hinted at dark chocolate-covered blueberry, though generally leaned more to the fruit/sugar end of the flavor wheel than more roast-oriented notes. I think those would surely come with darker roasting, which we don't recommend.

Origin & Farm Notes
The Kiamugumo Factory is located within Nyangeni sub-district of Kirinyaga. It's part of the New Ngariama Farmers Cooperative Society (FCS), a society whose coffees we've been a regular buyer of from stations like Kamwangi, and Kainamui. These "factories" are basically washing stations set up in a particular area and are allied with a larger Farmers Cooperative Cociety - or "FCS". Generally speaking, factories consist of milling equipment, washing/fermenting channels, and raised beds where the coffees are basically processed all the way down to dried parchment (being meticulously sorted along the way). Kiamugumo has a water recirculation system set up, as well as eight waste water soaking pits to help minimize the environmental impact. Kiamugumo farmers grow primarily SL-28, SL-34, Batian, and Ruiru-11 cultivars, benefitting from the red volcanic soils of Mt Kenya, and most are planted between 1600 and 1800 meters above sea level.
