Kenya Kirinyaga Kainamui Peaberry
A Kenya with complex fruits, and mouth pleasing interplay between acidity and juicy sweetness. Layered accents of spiced grape juice, cranberry-orange, black currant, and berry-flavored tea. City to Full City.
Full Cupping Notes
Kainamui made quite an impression straight from the grinder. At City roast level, the dry fragrance alluded to complex spiced sugars, clean and sweet, with notes of grape and citrus peel. Adding hot water brought out juicy sweetness infused with dark fruit notes, along with syrupy notes of pressed sugarcane juice. The cup is boldly sweet, even when kept to a very light roast, with mouth pleasing interplay between acidity and sweetness. A spiced aroma adds interest to layered fruit flavors, with juicy notes that bring together profiles of spiced grape juice, cranberry-orange, black currant, and berry-flavored black tea. The fruited flavor notes feed into this coffee's acidic impression, and stone fruit and citrus highlights punch through in the cup. City and City+ roasts have been my favorite, where acidity pulls at your tongue, though tempered by strength of sweetness. Kenyan coffees often yield delicious dark fruits when roasted darker, and we marveled at the flavors in our Full City brew. You get this really juicy dark grape note, with bittersweet balance underneath, dark chocolate truffle, and acidity is rounded off quite a bit.

Origin & Farm Notes
Kainamui is a "factory," a coffee mill in Kenya terminology, from the Kirinyaga growing district. This is where the farmers bring the coffee cherry they harvest in the local area for pulping, fermenting, and sun-drying. It is a cooperative coffee, one of two mills in the New Ngariama Farmers Cooperative Society, in the town of Kianyaga. While we have nothing against estate coffees, oftentimes the qualities from cooperatives is superior in Kenya. In a coop, each member is tending to only 200-500 trees on less than a hectare, as opposed to a huge estate that uses agribusiness growing methods. On its face, you might suspect that blending different coffees from hundreds of farms (sometimes more than a thousand!) might compromise quality in some way. But in many parts of East Africa where this model is prevalent (Kenya, Ethiopia, Rwanda, Burundi, for example), the exact opposite is true. We've been fortunate enough to buy Kianamui outside the auction system a couple of times due to our relationship with a intermediary in the area.
