Kenya Nyeri Kamoini AA
Kenya Nyeri Kamoini AA
Kenya Nyeri Kamoini AA
A snappy, "light and bright" Kenya profile, syrupy sweetness, sweet citrus tones like lemonade sweetened with raw sugar, pink grapefruit, aromatic hints of Meyer lemon, baking spice, and black tea. City to Full City.
Full Cupping Notes
The ground coffee has potent notes of dark sugar and citrus, mandarin orange, lemon squares with a dusting of clove powder. The wet aroma shows a nice juxtaposition of complex unrefined sugars and aromatic citrus notes, like lemon tart, and lemonade sweetened with brown sugar. Brewing a City roast extracts snappy brightness, while sweetness of raw sugars and simple syrup bring some relief. The mouthfeel is on the juicy side, and flavors combine to profiles of tangerine, lemonade sweetened with raw sugar, and the tart sweetness of pink grapefruit. As the coffee cools, the aromatic profile opens up to hints of cinnamon sticks, perfumed Meyer lemon, Darjeeling spiced black tea, and orange essence. The acidic impression had a grabbiness to it, especially in my light roast, which helped underline the citrus notes. I didn't venture beyond City+ roast level, and quite honestly see no reason to! That said, Kenyan coffees often show darker fruit tones at medium roast levels, and we've had really good luck in the mid-roasts with past lots of Kamoini.

Origin & Farm Notes
Kamoini is one of several coffees we picked up from Othaya Farmer's Cooperative Society (FCS), an FCS that includes an impressive amount of wet mills, 18 in all, dating back to the late 1950s. Kamoini Factory sits at 1825 meters above sea level, right along the Ichamama River, which is fed from the Karima forest above. "Factories" are essentially small washing stations aligned with a particular "society" in Kenya, what we would call a "cooperative". We return to the societies who seem to regularly produce some of the best Kenya coffees, and each year we come across societies that are new to us as well. Being one of the older Kenya FCS, we are well aware of the quality coming out of Othaya, and have had the good fortune of buying their coffee for several years now. This is an AA outturn, which means the beans are screened to separate out the largest coffee that measure 17-19 1/64ths of an inch. It's not always a sign of superior cup quality, but are generally given extra care in the dry milling phase and commands a much higher price.
