This coffee from Thadeo washing station, or "CPU" (coffee processing unit), is located in the southern highlands of Mbeya, Mbozi in western Tanzania. Thadeo actually took 3rd place at last year's Tanzania "Taste of Harvest" competition. Iwezya, Isende, Iyula, and others, these are the names of Farmer Business Groups (FBG), essentially cooperative efforts by smallholder coffee farmers to pool resources, processing and marketing of their crop. In a place like Tanzania, where small holders may only produce a few bags of coffee, FBG's give farmer members the opportunity to combine lots together, which in this case, affords them the resource of processing coffees on big machinery rather than by hand - a tedious task that would be necessary for processing small amounts of coffee. The stations sit at around 1650 meters above sea level and coffee is grown up to 2000 meters, with farms planted mainly in Bourbon and Typica cultivars. This is an AB/AA blend, meaning screen size goes from 15 microns to 19, which sounds like a large jump, but actually are fairly uniform in size (nothing too small for Behmor grid drums either!).
The ground coffee is perfumed with an intoxicating blend of dry fruit and spice smells. Our City roast gave off tropical fruit smells, like dried pineapple and mango slices, infused with herbal accents and a note of apple tea. The wet grounds allude to smells of baked goods with fruit, like blueberry muffin, or mixed berry crumble. It's a very sweet grouping of smells, and even a slight floral accent is produced in the lighter roasts. The cup pulls out much of the berry and tropical characteristics sensed in aroma. Sweet jammy flavors lay heavy on the palette, with a nice citrus rind tart aspect at the sides of your tongue. A pleasantly bright cup at City and City+, with a note of tart green grape adding to overall perceived acidity. Full City develops a healthy dose of pungent cocoa roast tones, a bit too heavy for my taste, but still leaving room for ribbons of dark berry and plum filling. I get a roasted barley and green tea flavor in the finish, that adds a briskness to the aftertaste. Body is medium, and brewing this coffee any number of ways will showcase this coffee's complex cup profile.
