The site that this estate rests on is an old coffee farm in Bittuang that dates back to the 1940s. It sits on a hill with a village called Karua, "gunung" meaning "hilltop" in Bahasa. Through the years, the coffee that was planted here was abandoned and the unmanaged land became overgrown with forest. In the late 1980s the land was purchased by a private agriculture business in Toraja who rehabilitated the land and planted in Typica, Jember and Catimor types. The farm spans an altitude range of 1500 - 1700 meters above sea level. This 1200 hectare estate is equipped with Pinhalense processing equipment and raised drying beds that are partially covered to protect from wet weather. This is a wet processed coffee, and a good example of how clean Sulawesi coffee can be and with articulated acidity. We had a wet-hulled coffee from the farm as well that we sold under the name "Bittuang Estate", which has already sold out. 

The dry fragrance has a clean sweetness accented by herbal tones and a mild ginger smell. The latter aspect develops into a gingerbread scent in the wet grounds, with a sweet maple smell in there too. The cup profile is fairly mild at first, but with a nice bright acidity that comes through like citrus spritzed water. A soft citrus rind accent helps bolster this affect. The cup is sweet at a wide range of roasts, and in that way, quite versatile. Light to middle roasts pull out muscovado/raw sugar sweetness along with a cinnamon muffin flavor. Full City brews have strong chocolate roast character and something like flourless chocolate torte. It's not bad at Full City, but I much prefer the clean cup character that comes at City/City+, showing more of what I look for in a washed Sulawesi: clean sweetness and vibrant acidity.
