Kohinoor is a medium bodied, mild acid, 'clean' daily drinking coffee. Simple syrup sweetness, roasted nut, licorice hints, and a barley tea note. Sweetness is convincing and is balanced by core bittersweet coffee characteristics. City+ to Full City.

Karnataka is a state in India, and the name of the group who sourced this coffee. They work with a fairly large group of plantation farmers throughout different counties within Karnataka, and this lot represents mostly coffees from the city of Chikmagalur. Chickmagalur sits at the foothills of Mullayanagiri range, probably the most famous coffee region in India. The Karnataka folks used to just buy from one growing group, but have since cast a much wider net, where some of the value is in their ability to increase selection, and putting together from this more premium blends. This lot is what is referred to as "A" grade, about 15-17 screen size, so large bean, and gets a second sort during milling. They offer AB too, which definitely cupped a bit lower than the A. At any rate, about 70% of the coffee grown in the region is of the old Kent 975 arabica varietal, and all the coffee is shade grown out of necessity, for reprieve from the oppressive Summer temperatures. We brought in this washed A grade, a naturally processed Arabica, and a really unusual PB this year. We're accustomed to seeing mainly robusta from India, and so it is a welcome change to cup an arabica coffee of this quality.
The dry fragrance of City+ roasts have a straight-forward, refined sugar sweetness with roasted nut low in the profile (lighter roasts tend to show more nut and grain smells). The aroma smells really clean actually, if not a bit abrupt, and you get a sense of the restraint that is found in the cup. The brewed coffee has a simple syrup sweetness, soft around the edges. It's two dimensional when hot, but not in a bad way. Just a nice daily drinking flavor, with balanced sweetness and bittersweet notes. As it cools City+ and Full City roasts show a nice culmination of toasted sugar, barley tea, and a licorice hint. This medium bodied, low acid cup, fits the bill for those craving mild Central and South American coffees.
