This is our second lot from Leonel Gutierrez, the first sold as "La Florida Vereda" as we did not know the name of his farm yet (that's him in the first pic, 2nd is looking up at his drying patio, and the 3rd is from above). "Colina" means hill, and the hill this farm is planted on tops out just above 1700 meters. His farm is mostly planted in caturra with some variedad Colombia intermixed. When I was there a couple months back he asked me how many bags we bought. When I told him 31 (these 22 plus the 9 bag lot we already listed) he grinned and told me that was his entire harvest! It comes to us from the quality-focused work of a local Timana cooperative, and our export partners in Medellin. The program involves cupping though many samples to identify farms and lots of particular quality, where we discovered this coffee from Leonel. The base price paid for the parchment coffee we buy is now in the 1,000,000 peso range, and when we select a coffee as a separate lot, a bonus is paid. Competition for Huila coffee is high, so paying high prices comes with the territory. And the premium we pay for the 'microlot' quality coffee sees an additional payment returned to the farmer, and immediately upon our approval of the sample. La Florida Vereda has produced some other very nice coffees so it's not a surprise to find Leonel's coffee scoring so well.
No surprise this lot is very close to the one we had last month. The dry fragrance has a familiar smell of honey and and panela sweetness (panela is the cakes of local, raw Colombia sugar), along with a bit of hazelnut chocolate spread. The wet aromatics are also intensely sweet, with butterscotch toffee, and cinnamon and clove spiced accents. The cup has a nice flavor of raw honey at City roast, followed by a note of cinnamon-dusted apple. There is a malic brightness too, adding structure to notes of peach and apricot, complex sugars, and vanilla. In the long finish a very attractive marzipan-like flavor is evident, amaretto essence, that crowns this coffee with unique grace. It's very sweet coffee, one that is superb for drinking in the light to middle roast ranges.
