Here's yet another beautiful gesha lot from the Monte Verde farm. Newerly Gutierrez, a family name we have long missed at Sweet Maria's, owns and operates Monte Verde. We've bought several micro-lots from his uncle Maximino and Maximino's father Oscar in previous years. They are members of Asoceas Cooperative in Herrera, Tolima, cultivating standout coffees at high elevations in the area. Newerly and his father, Gidardo, have invested in new varietals for Monte Verde growing moka, wush wush, and of course, gesha - all three will be featured over the coming month. The Gesha varietal is an Ethiopia heirloom variety from the town of Gesha, originally brought over and planted in Costa Rica, and now cultivated in many parts of Latin America. Exotic florals, tropical fruit, and bright acidity are hallmarks, and this lot is exemplary of these aspect. Only a single bag was produced, and so only available 1 LB increments.

Finca Monte Verde Gesha cups with intensity; exotic florals and fruit, voluminous sweetness, and Bergamot-like acidity. It's a perfumed cup, from the dry fragrance and on into the long finish - "gesha" flavor all the way. Florals exudes from the ground coffee, dry chamomile tea and honey. The presence of floral jasmine multiplies after pouring hot water. The crust of City roasts has a key-lime pie scent, sweetened, tart citrus. Baking spice complexity comes with a little more roast, and at City+ cinnamon stick, clove, and whole all spice are produced in the aroma. The cup has a weighty mouthfeel, like apple juice, and refreshing acidity that adds to the tactile impression. It's truly a refreshing cup in that way, as well as in the flavor characteristics that emerge as the cup cools. A whole host of fruit notes come up, but much more in line with 'tea' flavors - apple, tangerine, green grape, and so on, but as a tea version. It also has a bubblegum flavor, the plain pink one, a sort of candy, perfumed fruit flavor. Floral aspects go from Bergamot to jasmine, and create a pleasurable retro-nasal experience. This coffee is clean as they come, brisk like the flavors found in the cup, and the finish coming to a point. The complexity is best expressed in the light-to-middle roast ranges, and Full City is about as far as I would consider (though my preference is a light City+).
