The Trifecta MB is a home version of Bunn's commercial Trifecta unit, simplified, scaled down, but still with a lot of user-control to create the brew you want. If you enjoy experimenting with how your coffee is brewed, the Trifecta MB could be the right machine for you.
Part Aeropress, part French Press and part Star Trek, it agitates your ground coffee in an airtight, clear compartment and then creates enough air pressure in the compartment to press all your brewed coffee through a metal filter at the bottom. Although it's all pretty dramatic and exciting to watch, the end result is what counts. Our testing with this machine resulted in very well balanced cups that were different, but still tasty when brewed at different settings. The Trifecta MB uses a specially designed metal filter so there is some slight sediment. It's not as much as a French Press or SwissGold filter, but more than paper filter brewing methods. It is on par with the stainless steel Aeropress filter.
Cleaning the brew chamber after a batch is not as simple as lifting out a paper filter and disposing of it. You need to knock out the grounds, like a French Press. But the brew chamber is a rugged polycarbonate, so unlike glass presses you don't have to worry about breakage. And Bunn supplies 2 of them. We have had great results in the lab with the machine, and have used it for a few years now with no glitches. We think it is well designed, with meaningful brew parameters and a sturdy build. It's easy to use, or to show someone else how to use, provided they actually listen to you!
I find the machine a little bulky, and initially I saw it as an ideal brewer for a small office environment where people want to brew their own cups of coffee, always fresh. It might go with your kitchen, but was a little too Star Trek TNG for me to take it home. I still use a Clever or Aeropress on the weekends. But when we want to get a quick check on how a coffee brews in the cupping lab, the Trifecta MB is always there, ready and waiting. -Tom
