Peru FTO Cajamarca - Leoncio Perez Microlot

A great basic cup of coffee, this microlot from Leoncio Perez has a robust brown sugar sweetness, candied nut, and light flavor of red apple. Finishing sweetly, this balanced coffee shows great at City+, but can also withstand a bit of heat. Nice to have a solid FTO in stock! City+ to Full City+.

Leoncio Perez Ylatoma, is one of a few northern Peru small-holder farmers, whose coffees we were able to get our hands on. They're all from a cooperative association known locally as "El Palto", llocated in the Amazonian Andes. Founded in 2003 by 35 small farmers, the association now consists of 189 active members with a total area of 549 hectares in production. El Palto farm members all produce organic and Fair Trade certified coffees. Leoncino's farm is planted in Typica, and altitude ranges from about 1300 to 1800 meters.

The dry fragrance of this microlot has a nutty sweetness, black walnut coated in cinnamon and raw sugar. A baking spice smell comes off the ground coffee too, whole all-spice and cardamom pods. With hot water a scent of nutmeg and brown sugar comes off the steaming crust, and a buttery sweetness is released on the break. As a brewed cup, this coffee is a good daily drinker, and one that stands up to a fair amount of roast. I think it's best to take to at least City+, developing a robust and balancing brown sugar sweetness in these rather dense beans. Notes of almond and red apple fill out the middle, and the finish has the sweetness of raw sugar. It's great to get a solid FTO on the list!
