Peru FTO Argion Villanueva

A great daily drinking coffee from Agrion Villanueva, toasting sugar bittersweetness dominates the cup, with faint dried apple and almond notes, and a well-integrated acidity. City roast is a shade too light and tends to be a tad 'grassy'. City+ to Full City+.

El Palto Cooperative is located in the Amazonian Andes, a group that's more than quadrupled in size since starting in 2003 (currently 189 members). They've worked on increasing overall production as well as isolating quality, the resulting premiums doing much to assist the farmers personally, as well as reinvesting in the farmer group. They've been able to pay for Fair Trade and Organic certificates too, which helps to advance collective sustainability. Typica dominates the hillsides of coffee regions in Peru, a large bean coffee, one of the earliest Arabica species discovered in Ethiopia.

At City roast level there's a molasses sugar scent in the dry fragrance, straight-forward, and clean. The aroma of City and City+ roasts show convincing sweetness, and with hot water added, build mild fruited tones as well. The wetted grounds have a sweet smell of brown sugar and cream, a lingering nut note too in the steam. This Peru makes a great drinking coffee in the middle-roast ranges, City+ developing bittersweet flavors of toasting sugars, roasted almond, along with a faint dried green apple note. The acidity is very tea-like, slightly tannic but well-integrated, and the finish has a long-fading bittersweetness. City proved to be too light, grassy and a bit tight in the finish, but I think this coffee will work great from City+ to right around the 2nd snap level.
