Nicaragua La Bastilla Llamada

Llamada is a mild cup, caramel and nougat sweetness, roasted nut. Light roasts have light tea elements, and Full City is thick with toffee and nut flavors. Would make a great espresso blend base (or try as single origin). City+ to Vienna. Good as Espresso.

Washed Nicaragua coffees can be quite mild, and this lot from La Bastilla Estate is definitely that. "Crowd pleasing" is what we often say, and for good reason. It's Caturra coffee grown at low to medium elevation, and there's really nothing "wild" in the profile. And we like it this way - a pleasantly sweet, bodied, low acid cup. La Bastilla Estate is a large, 300 hectare farm situated between Datanli and El Diablo nature reserves. About half the farm is currently producing coffee, broken into small plots. "Llamada" is one of these plots, and this is a 30 bag separation.
Llamada has a sweet sugar and almond scent, like toffee-covered almond in the City+ to Full City roast range. The wetted grounds are this way too, and definitely smell much sweeter in the middle, rather than lighter, roast ranges. The brewed coffee of City+ roasts has flavors of creamy nougat and roasted nuts, with faint black tea and cocoa notes in the finish. Roasting to Full City adds a bit more strength to these flavors, bringing out a flavor of caramel and nut, like a sundae! A nice "coffee" coffee, if yo know what I mean, balanced bittersweetness even at darker roast levels. Will work great as a blend base for espresso.
