Kenya Nyeri Karogoto AB

Karogoto is such a juicy coffee in both weight and fruit juice flavors. Ripe cantaloupe, star fruit, and pineapple appear in the cup profile of the City roast. Darker roasts show papaya and caramel covered apple. Karogoto has silky mouth feel that coats the tongue with its sweetness, and holds on to the fruited profile through the finish. This is definitely one of the better Kenya coffees that we're bringing in this year, and judging from the high quality of our other Kenya coffees, that's saying a lot! City to City+.

Karogoto is part of Tekangu Farmers Cooperative Society (FCS) which combines the names for their 3 factories: Tegu, Karogoto and Ngunguru. I visited them this season and the previous as well, since we have bought many small lots over time from Tekangu. You probably recognize the Tegu name, and we have some great Ngunguru coffees this year as well. This is a Nyeri region coffee, where we find some of the nicest lots from Kenya. We cupped through several Tekangu samples this year in order to select coffees of this caliber, and this small lot comes from one particularly nice outturn (an unseparated parchment lot that comes into the mill). We bought both the Peaberry and AB screen size from this outturn; oddly the AA was not that spectacular.
Karogoto's overall profile has so much fruit complexity, and a sweetness that is somewhere between fruit juice and pectin sugar. The dry grounds are perfumed like a basket of citrus and tropic fruit - navel orange, ruby red grapefruit, kumquat, mango and banana. Sweet spices and sugar browning notes accent those fruits in the wet grounds as even more sweet citrus permeates from the crust and on the break. There is also something substantial and sweet in the long finish as well that reminds us of honeyed oats. This is definitely one of the better Kenya coffees that we're bringing in this year, and judging from the high quality of our other Kenya coffees, that's saying a lot!
