Ngunguru is one of three "factories" that form the Tekangu Farmers Cooperative Society. A factory is a wet mill in Kenya that serves a particular micro-region. Ngunguru is interesting in that it brings has member farmers from both the Mt. Kenya slope and the Aberdare zone: It serves farmers of Thiu sub-location in Kirimukuyu in with the Aberdare on one side and Mt. Kenya on the other. It's a beautiful location, averaging 1700 meters, and the wildlife list I have for the vicinity lists snakes, deer, hare, weaverbirds, owl and hawks. I'll have to look for a weaverbird next time I am there! Tekangu is a really nice coop, with Tegu and Karagoto being the other 2 factories, and often nice coffees as well. The AA indicates bean size and not necessarily a quality grade, but when we cupped this particular AA lot in Kenya, we were blown away by the clean, transparent profile found in the cup. This is the most expensive Kenya we picked up this year, but the pristine cup quality made it well worth the premium price.
Ngunguru AA has intense fruit jam aromatics in the dry fragrance like strawberry and raspberry, along with sweet herbal notes of lemon verbena. Dark roasts take on baking spice accents of all-spice and powdered ginger. The crust offers burnt sugar sweetness while the break demonstrates fresh cream, ripe peach notes, raspberry and toffee. Darker roasts proffer herbal qualities and a nice nuttiness along the lines of candied walnuts. At City+ roast level there's a lemon acidity in the cup that is pleasantly articulate and well defined. There is also a note of black tea leaf that bodes well with this citrus-like acidity. As the cup temperature dips, our light roast begins to show black currant, and a more rindy citrus, taking on a white grapefruit juice appeal. This coffee is so sweet, and like most of our Kenyan coffees, has an extensive list of fruited adjectives that only seem to grow as the cup becomes cooler. Light roasts really bolster the potential of this coffee's complexity, but articulate acidity remains a central aspect of the flavor profile at Full City as well.
