"Gunung" refers to a mountain's peak, the highest point. The group we do business with in West Java continues to 'wow' us with the work they're doing, collecting cherry from small villages and going to great lengths to process wet-process coffees cleanly and in small batches. This container that we purchased is made up of small blended lots of villages surrounding local mountain peaks. The altitude is ideal, and you see many of the original Typica plants alongside Ateng and Jember trees - Java Sunda (West Java) is where the first Java coffees were planted. But nowadays, most of the coffee leaving Java is from the East, where large holders are a dominant force. This is the sixth year of this project for us, and the first time we've tasted coffee from many of these regions.
These are some of the liveliest Javas we've tasted, so clean, sweet, and with malic vibrance in the cup. The dry fragrance of Crugutambor has a dense brown sugar scent with a note of spiced raisin oatmeal cookies. The wet aromatics are built on a thick sweetness of caramelized cane sugar and butter sweetness. Notes of raisin and brownie come up in the steam, and the break produces a mild citrus and nut scent, like orange glazed almonds. The brewed coffee is syrupy, a raw sugar and buttery sweetness, with flavors of spice cake, ripe orange, and a green apple note. City+ have the brightness of apple juice, which works well with a slight apple skin flavor/feel in the finish. Edging toward Full City notes of black cherry and clove spice come up in the profile. There's a "peppery" flavor too that emerges as these more developed roasts cool down a bit. A fairly complex brewed cup, this coffee works very well as espresso too. Full City roasts have loads of bittersweet chocolate and a surprising amount of citrus brightness.
