This is a small lot of Gesha cultivar from a different farm in the Acatenango region, not the source of larger Gesha lot we have offered for quite a few years now. Why offer another Gesha coffee from the exact same region? Well, one good reason is that it is absolutely delicious! It's different than the other one, especially in the fruited flavors in the cup. And it's just a tiny 4 bag lot. The farm is in Aldea La Pampa area of Acatenango, with coffee planted at 1400 to 1600 meters. I visited here a few years ago, and went out with the farm manager to look at the trees that he suspected were Gesha variety (that's him in the first pic). Indeed they were, based on the upright structure of secondary branches, leaf shape and fruit nodes. To confirm that they were Gesha, the fruit mucilage had a distinct sweet tropical fruit flavor that experience has told me is unique to Gesha. There were only a few of these trees on the 21 hectare farm, but since then they cultivated the seeds of those trees to produce more Gesha shrubs.
When we came across a sample of this coffee a few weeks back, we couldn't pass up the opportunity. "Opportunity" to pick up yet another gesha cultivar exemplary of what we look for in the upper tier - strong florals and articulated cup profile. Also the opportunity to have two gesha coffees from Guatemala at the same time, a region not necessarily considered synonymous with gesha cultivar production (though they both blew the Panama samples we cupped out of the water). The cup shows beautifully, competition level coffee all the way, as well as the aromatic profile leading up to it. The ground coffee has a scent of lilac flowers and raw sugar, and hot water builds on this perfumed base. Fresh cut flowers and sweet brown sugar smells fill the room. The cup follows suit, with floral jasmine notes leaping out of the cup, along with other top notes like citrus oils, herbal tea, and red apple. A lot of folks buying gesha for the first time, think that the high price equates to an over the top or wild cup, like what you find with naturally processed coffees. But it's quite the opposite, and save for perhaps over the top floral notes, it's the extreme cleanliness, well integrated top notes, and sparkling acidity that we prize. Subtle when hot, the cooling cup of a City+ roast has sweet, malic fruits, white grape juice, refreshing acidity, and a floral note that sings. This is best as a brewed cup, in my opinion, and you will achieve the most complexity in the City to City+ roast range.
