Hunapu is the indigenous name for Volcan de Agua, not far from Antigua's main center where we buy nearly half our Guatemalan coffees each year. But this reach has expanded to several of the outlying areas thanks to the intermediary we work with, who also happens to be both a farmer and mill manager (and just about every other coffee related job title!). Unlike the "estate" coffees we're used to from Antigua, the Hunapu area is comprised of small scale farmers whose coffee fields are planted on the volcano's slopes across an altitude range of 1600 - 1900 meters above sea level. Roughly 450 farmers are currently selling their coffee to the mill in Antigua where each lot is assessed for quality, and separated accordingly. This is micro-region separation from Hunapu "Dueñas" is made up mostly of cultivars Bourbon, Caturra, and Catuai.
This lot from Hunapu has sweet chocolate smells in light and medium roasts, particularly rich at City+ and beyond, along with a honey-nut sweet smell that gives depth to the fragrance. The wet aroma has chocolate and malty mix, like malted milk balls, with a pistachio smell too. The green nut/seed aspect comes through in the brewed coffee too, and my City+ roast showed aspects of pistachio, and chocolate covered pumpkin seeds. This may be a medium bodied coffee, but the dark chocolate bittersweetness that's achieved at City+ and beyond lends to a much more robust coffee character. Expect balance, and soft acidity, convincing sweetness, and finishing notes of carob, raisin, and cinnamon highlighting a deep bittersweetness.
