El Inteligente is from an old coffee estate overlooking the colonial city of Antigua, and is situated at a range of 6000 feet in altitude. The farm dates to early colonial times, but coffee was planted in the late 1800's and first exported in 1918. The farm is said to have a unique micro-climate in the Antigua valley as well as hillside exposure and well-draining soils. El Intelligente refers to a specific block of the farm, planted in old Typica and Bourbon cultivar trees. It has the best sun exposure, and ideal topography. To form this lot, we cupped too many small "day lots" to count, selecting those that had the best sweetness and brightness. Day lots are small harvest batches from particular areas of the farm. El Intelligente is a from the upper part of the farm so tends to ripen in the middle harvest.
El Inteligente is a sweet, crisply refreshing coffee. The dry fragrance of is like a spiced holiday punch with orange zest, clove, pumpkin spice, and very delicate aged rum notes. A delicate floral note, think dried rose petals, permeates the crust along with brown sugar. Sweet citrus, ala freshly peeled mandarin, and chocolate malt come up from the break. Right off the bat the flavor profile shows a crisp, Asian Pear-like acidity. The mouth feel is supple and balances out the bright yet sweet acidity in the City roast. A warming note of toasted almond lingers in background seemingly drizzled in caramel. The residual flavor is buttery again like butterscotch and toffee. At a City+ level the cup morphs into ripe plum and juicy concord grape. This lot of Inteligente will make a fantastic drip coffee and tremendous espresso.
