Busa Bechane has the sweetness of caramel candy, and with fruited flavors of apple juice and fresh peaches. Fruit notes build in the cooling cup with flavors of red berry and stone fruits becoming more perceptible. The mouthfeel is silky, and this coffee finishes surprisingly clean considering it's a decaf. All in all a great cup of decaf that will make an outstanding espresso too. City+ to Full City+.

Roast Recommendations Very sweet from City+ to Full City+. This is one decaf that I wouldn't hesitate roasting on the lighter side.

We've had great success with the custom Ethiopia decafs in the past, and this lot of Busa Bechane is no exception. Busa Bechane is the name of a cooperative in the Western Ethiopia growing region of Jimma. It is located in the Kersa kebele (a county) and situated at 1780 meters. The coop was started in 2010 and has a strong report card on meeting its commitments to farmer-members. The coop is assisted by a US-based non-government organization to improve it's coffee farming practices and processing techniques, as well as care for it's business practices. It is graded on whether it meets it's goals and so far Busa Bechane has achieved 87% of its coffee production and farm management goals, 75% of its health & safety goals for members and 77% of its environmental responsibility goals. This lot cupped so fresh and sweet before shipping it off for decaffeination and the resulting Swiss Water process decaf is stunning. This is why we have our own coffee decaffeinated - so that our decaf customers aren't forced to settle for a cup that tastes much more like cardboard than coffee. The folks at Swiss Water have really honed their craft, and so we're moving more and more toward only having our own coffees decaffeinated instead of buying from outside sources. This way we're able to curate our list and only create decaf coffees from already great tasting non-decaf coffees.
It's a decaf, yes, but working through the intensely sweet, balanced profile, you nearly forget. The fact that it's an Ethiopian coffee, on the other hand, you do not forget and are reminded of repeatedly in the aromatics as well as the cup. The fragrance has a sweet clove spice smell, along with a note of loose-leaf black tea. Light roasts have a nice smell of vanilla bean, while Full City harnesses a more malted sugar/molasses note along with cherry wood. Hot water really brings up a clean, caramel aroma and vanilla bean, culminating in a smell of creme brulee dessert. There's even (dare I say) a slight floral note that comes up on the break. This is quite a build-up for a decaf coffee, but well worth every adjective. Busa Bechane has the sweetness of caramel candy, and with fruited flavors of apple juice and fresh peaches. Sure, there's a slight note of fresh bread dough that comes with the territory, but this is trumped by this coffee's inherent balance of sweetness and acidity. All in all a great cup of decaf that will make an outstanding espresso too.
