This is a selection from our farm-direct Colombia program. When we score above 88 points, it is desiginated as a Micro-lot, processed separately, and a premium price is returned to the farmer. When I cup all these tiny lots each week, I don't know the details behind them, but this one made a great impression and we ranked it above everything in the weekly samples shipped from Bogota. As it was revealed later, this was grown by Mr. Manuel Santacruz. Mr. Santacruz has a small coffee farm in Bruselas, Huila he calls Los Galpones. The area is 7 Hectares and is cultivated with Caturra and Variedad Colombia. I visited there a while back and was impressed with how organized and neat everything was, from his super-clean pulper and coffee drying area to the way his trees were well-pruned. This is a region that is hard hit by the roya, the rust fungus, and the plants require care to keep them fit and productive. This also costs more in terms of labor and inputs. Hopefully attaining MicroLot status again will help towards these new costs for Manuel and other small farmers who are facing diminishing crop volumes!
This coffee is sweet! The dry fragrance has peach hints, and cane sugar sweetness, with concord grape juice appearing in the darker roasts. The wet aroma reveals some balanced spices and a cake-like sweetness ... very nice. I roasted samples in a wide range, and really enjoyed the cup from my light City roast to darker Full City+; it's a versatile coffee that can take a wide range of roasts. Each level was quite different in flavor profile. The City roast (very light and textured surface color to the bean) is lively, with floral hints, vibrant peach sweetness and a malty grain note. City+ roast has plum and caramel, while at FC+ there are dark fruits and chocolate pudding flavors that dominate the cup. I can't pick which roast level I like best; they are all sweet, clean, and distinct in their own right. The mouthfeel is silky and overall the body is medium. It's a balanced coffee between the moderate brightness, body and sweet roast notes.
