This coffee is the result of a new project that has sprung up in the La Plata Municipality of Huila, Colombia. D_n Diomedes is one of a few dozen families who are now delivering their coffee to the newly formed cooperative, who are in turn working with ourselves as well as our intermediary to identify the higher quality coffees for which they are paid a higher premium (last year we paid nearly double the base coop price for 3/4 of the coffee we purchased). La Plata lies in the foothills of the Cordillera Central mountain range, the farms in this group spanning a range of 1800 meters to 2000 meters above sea level. The average farm size is about 2 hectares with less than 10,000 trees planted, Caturra being the dominant cultivar grown, with some Variedad Colombia, and Castillo mixed in. Since buying their first exported coffees last year, we've seen the volume grow more than double, this last container culminating in over 200 bags of coffee. Like Inz across the river, coffee farmers in the Veredas surrounding La Plata town have access to extremely high altitudes and ideal microclimates for coffee farming.
The dry grounds show a composite of molasses sugars, dark dried fruits, and the sweet smokiness of roasted nuts. Both our City+ and Full City roasts produced a complex set of smells, and the wet aroma offered more of a glimpse into the cup characteristics to come. City+ and Full City roasts have a nice baked apple smell, with toffee and sugar, cinnamon accents, like a fruit crumble. Breaking through the crust presents an herbaceous side, subtle tobacco and fresh Thai basil notes. The coffee brews so well, City+ roasts finding a nice middle ground between raw cane juice sweetness and bittersweet chocolate tones. It isn't until the coffee cools considerably that top notes draw your attention, red apple, almond bark, and herbal horehound candy. Definitely a crowd pleasing cup in terms of balance and simple, yet succinct flavors, and with a perceived acidity that's like fruit juice adding a mouth cleansing effect in the finish.
