This is a very articulate, and clean decaf with a nice balance of cup flavors. There's a raw honey sweetness, with browning sugars and cacao powder. The body is delicate, and with a Full City roast a pleasant milk chocolate taste emerges. City+ to Full City+.
This Bolivia coffee was decaffeinated from beans that were originally processed at the coffee mill Buenavista, located in the Caranavi growing region. It is not a farm-specific coffee; It represents coffee cherry bought directly by the mill from local producers, and processed together without farm separation. They don't have the receiving tanks to delineate fruit from each farm or local region in Caranavi they buy from, and the farms would be too small to do this anyway. Instead we get a melange of nice micro lot coffees, turning out a really great Bolivian blend. This mill produced the best Bolivia I cupped last year, and so we're really excited to offer decafs from the same caliber of coffee. WP means Water Process decaf, a direct contact method that uses water filtration to separate the caffeine from the coffee without using chemical solvents.
This Bolivian decaf cups really well, even when taken outside of the context of "decafs" in general. It has a nuttiness in the dry grounds with almond, and the smell of sweet, whole grain - think grapenuts. Once infused, the wet aroma offered more of the toasted grain smell, candied almond, cinnamon and even a touch of brewers yeast. The profile of the aromatics, both dry and wet, are nice, but are trumped by the profile found in the cup. This is a very articulate, and clean decaf with a nice balance of cup flavors. The cup really opens up as it cools, and while not an extremely complex cup, it only gets sweeter the closer it comes to room temperature.
