The Specialty Coffee Association of America annual conference was in Boston this year, and in my mind it was the best one since San Francisco. This year was marked by the presence of the new e-member level, basically advanced consumers who could gain access to parts of the show at a lower price. Unfortunately, someone decided the theme this year was "a shot heard around the world," referring to espresso, not to the war in Iraq. The irony was painful, if anyone cared to notice. I am not sure they did, but for the degree to which coffee subjects absorb the majority of my time, I felt like our profession is trivial and rather dumb. I suppose I got over it though ...

But there were some great things at the show. The Roaster's Guild cupping room was busy with at least 8 coffee origins holding separate sessions |
