Home roasting is as easy or as complicated as you want to make it. You can take a DIY approach and buy a pound of green coffee, or buy one of our Green Coffee Samplers, read our instructions, and check out the methods we mention here, or you can buy one of the Starter Kits we outline below.
In my opinion, you want to pick a roaster based on two factors: 1) how much coffee you drink (batch capacity) and 2) how much you want to spend. If you are roasting for 1 or 2 people, a small air roaster is a great way to get started and is not that costly. The larger machines, the drum roasters, tend to be more expensive. The machines give you a greater chance of success since the amount of heat, time, and agitation of the beans has been automated. Though the DIY approach can be rewarding since it is a challenge!
There is not one BEST machine, or BEST way to roast - only a lot of different options that you ought to consider and then pick one that seems to fit. Starting with good quality beans and drinking fresh roasted coffee makes a huge difference in what you taste in the cup.
I wrote a FAQ here on choosing a home roaster in case that is helpful.
