Quick Overview

So you're a bona fide coffee snob. You just can't drink the office coffee. When you are at the Motel 6 or Joe's Diner on I-5, you really don't want to find out what they are brewing. Instead of hauling around an Aeropress or a French Press or a Technivorm, you might consider these small One Cup Coffee Filters that can fit in your pocket more comfortably than a Hario V-60. They expand to perch on top of a glass or mug, revealing a small filter pouch to load up your own fresh ground home-roasted coffee! These great little brewers come in packs of 12 and are perfect for campers, globetrotters, or anyone desperate enough to travel with their own coffee. They hold around 14 grams of coffee, and the trick is to pour in hot water slowly and with enough patience not to overfill the limited capacity of the filter pouch. While a slow pour might seem like a dealbreaker for those who want a good cup of coffee on the road, it actually is why the filter produces a good cup: It forces you to slow down the brewing resulting in better extraction of coffee flavors from the grounds. We pre-wet the coffee grounds for 30 seconds at first to prevent too much "bloom" of fresh coffee. While it sure is easier to use a pour kettle like the Hario Buono, I have used these with the Pino Kettle, Bodum Ibis, and a milk steamer pitcher. As long as you are not a total klutz, you can hit the target. You need a little head space in the cup, since the filter sits a little bit inside the cup rim, so taller mugs or glasses are ideal. It span over cups up to a little over 4 inches wide. The cup in the photos has an opening diameter of 3.5 inches. Click here to watch the video demonstrating the filter.
