This is the squiggly wire grid to protect your Chemex from the burners of an electric range. You place this on the electric heating element and turn it on low to keep the Chemex warm or to pre-heat it for brewing. Don't attempt to heat water to boiling in a Chemex though, this is just for warming...

Note that the Chemex Wire Grid is also very useful for those who use vacuum-brewers on an electric range!
