Description

Details

Dumerso is a washing station in close proximity to Yirga Cheffe town. Coffee from small-holder farmers is delivered directly to Dumerso, as well as collected from buying stations located at key points in the area. The Dumerso mill is owned by a local family who live in town, and they have been focusing more effort (and space on their extensive drying beds) to natural coffees rather than their wet-processed lots. They produce quite a volume of coffee, but we were really happy with this particular lot of natural when I cupped it while in the country early in the harvest. At that time the fruit was quite edgy and near over-ripe, but I could see how rest would tame the wild edge on this coffee. It did, but this is still a heavyweight, both in terms of body, but also in sheer intensity of flavor. It also has a lower perceived acidity than our other DP lots, adding to the perception of extraordinarily thick mouthfeel.

This Dumerso dry-processed lot is a powerhouse in terms of fruit-forward aromatics. The dry-fragrance has a cornucopia of fruits, pineapple, peach, melon, Turkish apricots, along with a substantial backdrop of chocolate and bittersweet burnt sugars. The fruits approach floral dimensions, closest to fragrant lilies like stargazer or ginger lily. The wet aromatics are equally strong, representing blackberry, dried strawberry, dried mango, jackfruit, dark cocoa nibs, burnt sugars. The cup is, predictably, loaded with fruit flavors and a heavy backdrop of bittersweet roasted cocoa notes. From tropical to temperate, there are fruits like mango, jackfruit, and melon to red berry jam, dried apricots, and cooked peach. A strong spice mix exists too, with licorice root, and allspice dominating, especially in heavier roasts. Dark raw sugars mix with bittersweet cocoa to outline the effect of roast. The body is thick, seeming sticky in combination with the fruited flavors and uncut by acidity that, in other coffees, has a palate-cleansing effect. This coffee sits very heavy on the palate and keeps delivering through the long aftertaste.
