| We are selling the coolest traditional Espresso Demitasse Cup sets. Personally, I dislike overly-decorated giftware and thin wimpy espresso cups. These have been the standard Italian street-level espresso cup for decades. They are bar-ware (espresso bar ware) and so are not fine porcelain. There may be some imperfections in the glaze. They are the traditional MokaBrown (reddish-brown) color with white interiors. They are vitrified porcelain, and incredibly thick ( 3/8" side walls) and strong. Once heated, they prevent heat loss as you enjoy your short Espresso, or true 5 ounce Cappuccino. If you want a Big Gulp, go to 7-11! | |||||||||||||||||

I enjoyed these new hand-blown, double-wall insulated glass cups for 4 weeks until I finally broke one. It was inevitable. In slow-motion, I watched the demitasse Assam cup roll off the table, drop 2 feet onto a wood board without breaking, then drop aother foot onto the concrete floor. That was that. When glass meets concrete, you know who wins. But I was surprised to see how it bounced off the wood surface without breaking and realized it is because the cups are lab glass (Borosilicate). |  |

Now, that doesn't mean they won't break, as I demonstrated. But they are tougher than you might think. They are amazing cups, beautifully made, and make any coffee drink look elegant. In fact, the difference in the appearance, the hue, the opacity, of various single-origin coffees is so compellingly presented in these cups that (for me) it has underscored a source of coffee enjoyment; the beauty of brewed coffee. As you can imagine, espresso looks fantastic in the demitasse Assam and Pavina cups, in particular, shots made with a bottomless portafilter. The cups are double wall and they do insulate your hand from hot coffee, as well as help the beverage retain heat longer. No, it won't keep coffee hot for hours, but I tested 2 cups and a solid porcelain cup was 12 degrees cooler than the Assam 7 ounce cup after 10 minutes. The cups are great for cool drinks as well as hot, although I am not sure what cold beverage you serve in a 2 ounce cup. The large 12 ounce Pavina is most useful as a hot and cold drink cup. I like the Assam myself: I like the shape, I like the way it feels in my hand. |

| The rated cup capacity is not measured to the brim. The medium 7 and 8 ounce sizes hold another ounce if filled to the brim, as does the 12 ounce Pavina. The demitasse Assam and Pavina will actually hold 3 ounces, although that is a very tight fit in the Pavina (rated at 2 ounces). Note that all glasses are sold in sets of 2. | More about the glass used in the double-walled cups from Bodum: Bodum's insulated glassware is made from durable Borosilicate glass. Borosilicate glass is a strong heat-resistant glass that weighs less than traditional glassware. Used to make scientific lab glass, borosilicate glass (medical grade glass) is stronger than traditional "soda-lime" glass and can be used for everything from drinkware to cookware. Borosilicate glass substitutes boron oxide in place of the soda and lime used in traditional glassware. The boron oxide acts as a glue holding the silicate together and due to the small size of boron particles, the glass is held together tighter, resulting in a stronger glass. Some customers may perceive the glass to be "thin" as they hold it. It is important to explain the difference between borosilicate and soda lime glass. Borosilicate glass doesn't need to be as thick as traditional glass to be just as strong. Borosilicate is simply a different type of glass that is resistant to temperature swings and scratching. Because the particles are held together so tightly, borosilicate glass is dishwasher safe and will not become cloudy over time; you can rest assured that after 100 cycles, the glass will be as clear as the day you bought it. Simply treat it as you would any glass product and it will stand up to every day use. Dishwasher & microwave safe. Instructions for use: Bodum insulated, double wall glass is handmade by expert artisans, so they say. Because this glass is mouth-blown (their term, not mine!), each one may have slight differences in height, thickness & weight. Please use care when placing ice into the glass to avoid fracturing the inner layer. Please also avoid using metal spoons or placing the glass into a crowded dishwasher.
