Sweet Maria's Weblog

Cupping California

On August 9th, Sweet Maria's was one of a number of sponsors of Cupping California, an event organized by Sprudge.com in the cafe/outdoor sculture garden of  San Francisco's Museum of Modern Art. Although it was aimed at the local coffee community, the event was open to anyone that had a ticket to the museum that day so it was a mix of the usual coffee folks and other random people.   We helped set up before the event and contributed two roasts that were sampled next to some of California's best roasted coffees. 42 coffees, 17 roasters, 175 people...that's a lot of coffee and people in the same room.

It seemed a bit crazy at times, more like performance art than coffee really.  What's it like to swap spit with 175 people? A bit weird.

It was lovely though -  the setting was exquisite, perched next to a beautiful cityscape, with great artwork just steps away to escape to.  I did not taste the coffees myself: there was a big line and it felt weird to follow in so many assorted people and share the same cups. One of our staff overhead the best comment though in the elevator on the way down: "I didn't want to wait 20 minutes for a cup of coffee."

Three new additions to our coffee list

Sumatra Lake Toba 19+ Screen is a unique, large bean and foresty lot, tons of pine, dark herbs and leather.

Yemen Mokha Matari is an intense cup with dark-fruited bittersweetness, allow 72 hours rest.

Espresso Workshop #25 - Saludos de Aleco is the first blend developed by the newest member of the Sweet Maria's family, expect a creamy shot with ripe stone fruits and a wild honey finish.

Sweet Maria's featured in home roasting ibook

We had a film crew come by a few months ago to shoot a feature on our business. The footage they shot is now part of a very informative ibook for ipad that would be great for someone getting started home roasting or someone who wants to improve their home brewing skills.

Click here for the promo video, the link to the book in the ibookstore and a chance to win a few home roasting/brewing items from us.

Four new additions

Guatemala Finca La Esmeralda Red Bourbon has well integrated acidity, great balance and creamy body. Nicaragua Maracaturra - Finca El Naranjal is a unique, large bean varietal with black walnut roast tones and brisk lemon tea accents. Ethiopia Nano Challa "Eid Al-Adha" is a complex cup with white honey, Dutch cocoa, and a weighty mouthfeel. Sumatra Onan Ganjang Cultivar has cherry cola and sarsaparilla fading to cocoa bitterness; syrupy body and dark fruits round out this excellent Sumatra lot.

Celebrate the weekend with a new Ethiopia and Nicaragua

We've listed two great new coffees going into the weekend: Ethiopia Dry Process Saris Abaya is heavily fruited with a blend of berries and spice, and healthy doses of chocolate. This coffee has a "weighty" body and silky mouthfeel. Our other offering is Nicaragua Dipilto Cielo Azul , and has an almond nuttiness to it, with butterscotch and honey. Expect more offerings from Central America in the coming weeks.
